My Google Maps / Product Alteration

I love Google Maps. But even though I adore the product, I’ve still had some confusing moments while using the app. Specifically, I have a love/hate relationship with the Google Map’s saving feature.

I figured, I’m a designer, let me whoop up some changes that would make it better for the way I use it ;). This is in no way a hateful jab at the people at Google. It’s just a fun way for me to put my preferences into a product I adore.

Saved Places on Google Maps
I save places on google maps constantly. I save places like restaurants, bars, shopping destinations, etc. They naturally cluster around cities. This is because 1. I live in a city, and 2. I travel to cities.

Saved Lists
On Google Maps, you can save places via the default lists google provides (Favorites, Want to go, and Starred) or you can create custom lists (i.e. Restaurants, Cafés, Thrift Stores, Asian Grocers, etc.). While I prefer my custom lists, maps only offers a teal flag for custom lists I create, , so its hard to distinguish on a map.

The first thing I wanted to try was to include more flexibility in creating custom lists. Maybe I can assign color or even an icon.

>> My Places After

The other thing I wanted to add was a way to filter by city/location as there is no way to do this. What this means is that if I want to have lists where I can call out Boston bars only, I would have to create separate lists for each city. (Boston Restaurants, Boston Café, Boston Bars, NYC Restaurants, NYC Cafés, NYC Bars, etc…). Given that I have 8 custom lists and 9 different cities represented, that means 72 list items. Thats way too many.
